Day 2: Bale rescue Wales as they draw USA in their 2022 World Cup opening match as England thrash Iran
Three matches were played in day two of the World Cup, of which one was in the group A and the others, group B.
It was the England team that started the day’s match and they played against Iran. Gareth Southgate’s men won a 6-2 goal margin at the Khalifa International Stadium. It was already a 3-0 win for the Three Lions in the first half with goals coming from Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Raheem Sterling. Later in the second half, substitute Marcus Rashford, Grealish and Saka scored his second goal. On the side of the Iranians, Mehdi Taremi scored all their two goals, one coming from a penalty conceded by John Stones. Saka, won the Man of the Match (MOTM). Next matches in the group B includes: England vs United of America, and Wales versus Iran. Even though they won with a 4 goal difference, the England coach admitted his anger with the 2 goals his team had considered. But praised his side for the massive win.
The second game of the day, was one understanding match in Group A between the African Champions, Senegal and the Netherlands. Senegal had already lost their skipper, Sadio Mane due to injury. Senegal had dominated the game in the first 45 minutes but couldn’t take their chances. De Jong had delivered a nice cross of which Coady Gakpo had connected it nicely to give the Hollands the lead. With Mendy who failed to stop the ball but waited for it to be headed pass him. And from the bench, Memphis Depay had powered a low shot of which Mendy failed to keep it save which made Davy Klaassen to double the lead in that last minutes. Ecuador now tops the the Group A, Netherlands in the second position. Thus, on Friday, Qatar faces Senegal as Ecuador plays Netherlands. Frenkie could have scored in the early minutes from the kickoff time but failed to find the net. Nevertheless, the Dutch were favorites to win this match and their stats says, they have kept consecutively, four clean sheets.
USA took the lead in the first half with a goal from Timothy Weah and assisted by Christian Pulisic. It looked like the Americans were walking away with all the three points but Gareth Bale, made them shared the point in a late goal. Did you know? The Wales failed to register a single shot on target in the first half.
